The Athletics have signed right-hander Brandon McCarthy to a one-year deal and they appear to be closing in on designated hitter Hideki Matsui as well. Sources told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney that Oakland is nearing a deal with Matsui. McCarthy did not pitch in the majors last season and was limited in Triple-A with a stress fracture in his shoulder.
