The Mariners have finalized a $2.5 million, one-year contract with left-handed slugger Jack Cust. Cust spent the past four seasons with Oakland and likely will become Seattle's regular designated hitter, though the slugger also provides versatility for new manager Eric Wedge with his ability to play the outfield. "We were looking, obviously, for something to help our offense and Jack fit the bill," general manager Jack Zduriencik said. "He's a guy that has power. A left-handed hitter and we think he will play well here at Safeco [Field]. He's a guy that's been pretty durable and we really like his plate discipline and we think that we've filled a need."
