Former Yankees third base coach Larry Bowa admits that shortstop Derek Jeter's play has declined, but said that his value remains high to the organization.
"Is he declining?" Bowa asked in an interview with The New York Daily News. "No question as you get older, you decline. Do you overpay now because of what (Jeter) has meant to the organization? These are very difficult questions, no doubt about it. He's a class act, there's nothing phony about it. Is he as good a shortstop as 10 years ago? Probably not. But knowledge-wise, he's better, knows how to play hitters better
"I think if a guy's vanishing or he's not what he used to be, you can still utilize a guy like Jete - put him in the front office, he could be the (team) spokesperson, or give him a personal services contract. I can't see him not (re-signing). Jete respects the Yankees. I think Yankees respect Jete for what he's done."
