The Cubs appear very close to wrapping up a contract extension with first baseman Derrek Lee, and an announcement could be made as early as Tuesday. Before Sunday night's game against St. Louis, Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said something "could be done in the next couple of days" but would not elaborate. Lee originally wanted a deal done before the start of the season, or else he said he would wait until after the season to negotiate or opt for free agency. However, he allowed contract talks to continue a week into the season when he felt there was progress. On Friday, Lee said he wanted to know one way or the other by Saturday.
