The Rangers dominated the Yankees for seven innings on Friday night before the defending champions exploded with a five-run eighth inning to take Game 1 in Arlington.
New York became the first team to win a postseason game after trailing by at least four runs in the eighth since Houston did so in 2005.
"They used to have this show called the 'Twilight Zone.' That's how I felt," Texas starter C.J. Wilson said. "We were all kind of pacing in the dugout. It was surreal."
