The Cardinals will assume Albert Pujols' $16 million option for 2011 within 10 days after the World Series. Pujols also will achieve his 10 and five status, meaning he would have to improve any trade. John Mozeliak will engage Pujols' camp on an extension, but will look to improve the club via free agency first. "We have a number of other issues we need to get to first," Mozeliak said last week. "We certainly plan to engage Albert and his agent in talks at some point. It's something we feel is very important, obviously. But we also have to position ourselves to address our needs for next season." Pujols has yet to say how the club's regression from 91 wins and a division title may color his stance in upcoming months. "It could go two ways. It could be a very complex negotiation. It could be a very simple one," Mozeliak said. "It just depends on a meeting of the minds. Fortunately we have a very good rapport with Mr. Lazano. "When the time comes to engage, hopefully every side is prepared. I certainly think preparation is critical." Both sides insist no substantive talks have taken place since Pujols' agent met with Mozeliak in Florida during Spring Training.
