The Padres have avoided arbitration with closer Heath Bell, agreeing to a one-year contract for $4 million in 2010, according to a club official who asked not to be identified. The 32-year-old Bell, a National League All-Star for the first time last season, was 6-4 with 42 saves and a 2.71 earned run average in 68 appearances last season, his first as a closer. Bell made $1.255 million in 2009.
