The Boston bullpen reacted strangely to news that the team placed a waiver claim on Mets reliever Billy Wagner.
The Mets have until Tuesday to decide whether to trade Wagner to the Red Sox, allow the Sox to just take him, or pull him off waivers and retain the pitcher.
"What has he done?" closer Jonathan Papelbon asked WEEI. "Has he pitched this year?"
Wagner has made one appearance for New York since returning from elbow surgery.
"Is he ready to pitch or is he not? You know what I mean?" continued Papelbon. "I think our bullpen is good where we're at right now. Don?t get me wrong. But I guess you could always make it better. It's kind of like the Gagne thing, I guess."
In 2007, the Red Sox had the best bullpen ERA in baseball, but added Eric Gagne as insurance policy. He promptly posted 6.75 ERA in 20 appearances for the Sox.
