John Smoltz will accept a contract offer from the Cardinals, sources told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Smoltz is expected to be the team's fifth starter after he cleared waivers and became a free agent this week.
The Cardinals will only be responsible for $100,000, a pro-rated share of the major-league minimum. The Red Sox, who designated him for assignment on Aug. 7, are still on the hook for the remainder of his $5.5 contract.
