The first round of baseball's First-Year Player Draft on Tuesday night was perfectly split between hitting and pitching. Sixteen pitchers were picked, led by Stephen Strasburg, who was taken first overall by the Nationals. Sixteen hitters were drafted, including three of the first four selections. After the Pirates took catcher Tony Sanchez fourth, a run of eight pitchers came off the board. In 2008, 20 of the 30 first-round picks were position players, including twelve of the first 14. In 2007, 16 of the 30 first-round picks were pitchers, including seven of the first eleven.
