Jerry Manual said that if necessary, the Mets' ace Johan Santana will pitch Saturday on three days of rest against the Marlins on Saturday. "We're talking about the end of the season, where we have a pretty good chance to make it special," Santana said. "If we have to step it up to go to the next level or do something else, then we'll definitely do it." If the Mets are either tied or trailing the Brewers in the National League Wild Card race after Friday's games, then Manuel would use Santana on short rest. Santana has not pitched without regular rest since he did so as a Twin in the 2004 American League Division Series against the Yankees.
