Hideki Matsui could land on the disabled list with a sore right knee, according to The Star-Ledger. He has not played since Sunday and said on Thursday that the knee felt a "little better" but was not in the lineup for the first game of the Yankees' doubleheader against the Mets. "It's always a possibility," Manager Joe Girardi said of putting Matsui on the DL. "You don't want it to come to that, but if we feel it's in the best interest of him and the club, that's something we'll talk about." He was expected to be examined by a team doctor on Friday. "If I try, I think I could (play the outfield)," Matsui said through interpreter Roger Kahlon. "I just don't know if I would have the range I usually have. Obviously, I think it would benefit me (to not play the outfield all weekend). I also think it would benefit the team in that sense."
