David Ortiz Won't Participate In Home Run Derby

Jun 30, 2016 8:10 AM

David Ortiz says he won't participate in the Home Run Derby at All-Star Weekend next month.

The Boston Red Sox wouldn't have stood in Ortiz's way if he wanted to participate, but they are thrilled he's sitting it out.

"If it turns out he doesn't participate in the Home Run Derby, I think that's probably music to all of our ears," John Farrell said. "But at the same time, he's earned the right to enjoy and experience that opportunity in San Diego as much as anyone."

Ortiz hasn't taken part in the Home Run Derby since 2010.

All Four Cubs Infielders On Pace To Start All-Star Game

Jun 24, 2016 8:52 AM

The National League All-Star team may start the entire Chicago Cubs infield next month.

If Kris Bryant, Addison Russell, Ben Zobrist and Anthony Rizzo are voted in as starters, it would be just the second time in baseball history that four infielders from the same team started the game.

"I'm happy for our guys," Joe Maddon said after the latest round of voting was released on Wednesday. "I think it's great. It's great for the organization."

Not since the 1963 Cardinals has a team started its entire infield in the All-Star Game.

"It will elevate their game," Maddon said. "I believe that."

Arieta Interested In All-Star Home Run Derby

Jun 12, 2016 6:26 PM

Winning games on the mound isn't enough for Cubs ace Jake Arrieta, who on Saturday echoed Giants starter Madison Bumgarner's desire to participate in the Home Run Derby at the All-Star Game.

"If he's in it, I need to be in it," Arrieta said after earning his 10th win and collecting two hits in Saturday's win over the Braves. "That's for sure. He can hit the ball a long way, but I can too."

Madison Bumgarner Says Home Run Derby Doesn't Pose Injury Risk

Jun 8, 2016 12:01 PM

Madison Bumgarner says he's not worried about injuring himself if he's allowed to participate in the All-Star Home Run Derby.

Bumgarner pointed out to reporters that the San Francisco Giants let him ride a horse in April last year when he carried the team's World Series banner onto the AT&T Park field before the home opener. That posed a bigger risk to his health than swinging a bat would, he said.

"I mean, they had me ride a horse on the field, so if they trust me with something like that with 40-some-thousand people going crazy and I can't do baseball activities, that's a little bit different," Bumgarner told reporters. "We'll talk about it for sure. I'm not trying to say that this is a done deal or anything like that."

Madison Bumgarner Has Eye On HR Derby

Jun 8, 2016 5:57 AM

Madison Bumgarner's pleas aren't exactly falling on deaf ears, but Giants manager Bruce Bochy isn't about to give into temptation.

After putting on a display in batting practice on Sunday at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, the hard-hitting pitcher reiterated to ESPN's Buster Olney that participating in July's Home Run Derby is a priority.

"I want to do it," Bumgarner told Olney prior to ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball matchup between the Giants and Cardinals.
