Atlanta Braves? centerfielder did everything the Braves asked of him this year and more. When they put him in between Brian Jordan and Raul Mondesi to start the year, he didn?t complain and took it upon himself to cover most of the outfield.
When the Braves ditched this plan and stuck Jones with rookies in the outfield, he didn?t complain and guided them until they were ready to stand on their own. Then finally, when Chipper Jones and other key players went down and the Braves desperately needed him most, he hoisted Atlanta on his back and went on a torrid run that hasn?t been seen since Bonds had two good knees.
So, while the Braves weren?t able to close the deal, it seemed like a foregone conclusion that the Braves? slugger would be collecting some prestigious hardware in November. That was when the rug was pulled out from under him as the Baseball Writers? Association of America decided St. Louis first baseman Albert Pujols should receive this honor. Now, don?t get me wrong, Pujols is a great player who had a great season, but the only way you can justify him winning the MVP is because he has a great first five years of his career, but could never move out of the shadow set by Bonds.
The problem with this rationale is the MVP is for the most valuable player in that season. If you take Andruw Jones off of the Braves, they most certainly would have finished last in a division they have never lost, while the Cardinals would have still been in a fight for the division.
Andruw Jones had more home runs and RBI?s than Pujols, all while playing a gold glove centerfield, even though he had to deal with obstacles already discussed. Also, while both Pujols and Jones had to deal with their fair share of injuries, Pujols? Cardinals had players on the major-league club to fill in, while the Braves had to delve deep into their farm system to bring up players who would have to learn on the fly. This learning curve was aided by the torrid tear Jones went on shortly after, which in effect saved the season for Atlanta.
As I have stated before, Albert Pujols had an incredible season for the Cardinals and is worthy of being included in the discussion for MVP. However, Andruw Jones had a memorable season and he shouldn?t be kept from the MVP because Pujols has been overshadowed by Bonds. If that?s the case, then why don?t we make Roger Clemens give back some of his Cy Young?s to other pitchers because they had great seasons, but were overshadowed by Clemens.
The reason you don?t is because you shouldn?t take accolades away because someone else should get a chance. Just as Bonds deserves all of those MVP?s and Clemens his Cy Young?s, Andruw Jones deserved and should of won the 2005 National League MVP.
