The American League West has always given baseball fans a wild division race every summer. They also have provided some excellent drafting, as seen with the enormous amount of good young talent now on display at the big league level. Read on to see how they have done it and what they might do next week.
Seattle Mariners (Picks: 11th overall):
In the Northwest, you have to rely on the draft to bring in talent for the most part, but the Mariners have only five drafted players on their active roster. Two of these players are shortstop Willie Bloomquist and closer J.J. Putz, but for the most part, the Mariners have relied on free agency and the minor league trade. In this respect, Seattle needs pitching help in the organization and just some pure talent to build on, so look for them to take the best pitcher available at No. 11, which could be Deland High School prospect Michael Main.
Texas Rangers (Picks: 17th and 24th overall):
The Rangers have only five of their drafted players on the active roster, but they have hit big with infielders Mark Teixeira, Ian Kinsler and Hank Blalock. Looking at their organization, they need pitching help desperately need pitching depth to match a solid offense. It is tough to pitch well in Texas, but general manager Jon Daniels has started to add more quality young arms and can be expected to do the same next week in the first round and beyond. They are slotted to take left-handers Nick Schmidt and Brett Cecil.
Oakland A?s (Picks: 26th overall):
General Manager Billy Beane has made the draft a bit of an art form, thanks to the vivid descriptions laid out in Moneyball. Beane and his staff rely on statistics and tend to go after proven college players as opposed to high school stars. They have eight drafted players on the roster, including three first round hits in pitcher Joe Blanton, third baseman Eric Chavez and outfielder Nick Swisher. Look for them to get great value at No. 26 with Florida slugger Matt LaPorta.
Los Angeles Angels (Picks: None):
The Angels lost their pick, No. 24, to the Texas Rangers with their signing of outfielder Gary Matthews Jr. The loss of the pick doesn?t hurt them much, saying they have 13 drafted players on their active roster. The Angels? brass is one of the best in baseball at judging young talent, so baseball fans will have to wait in the draft to see them work their magic in 2007.
