The American League Central is considered by many to be the deepest and best division in baseball. With four teams have a shot of winning the American League championship each spring; the Kansas City Royals are mired in a last place funk each year. Can they change that with a strong 2007 draft? Read on to find out.
Kansas City Royals (Picks: 2nd overall)
The Royals have built a nice, young collection of talent to build around that should develop in the next two years. Some of these players that were drafted by the Royals are third baseman Alex Gordon, outfielder Billy Butler and pitchers Zach Greinke and Luke Hochevar. General Manager Dayton Moore has strong ties to the Atlanta Braves and knows they built their success off strong in-house player development. So, it can be expected the Royals will do the same in 2007 as Moore looks to improve their pitching depth with Seton Hall Prep ace Rick Porcello.
Cleveland Indians (Picks: 13th overall)
General Manager Mark Shapiro is one of the best in baseball of identifying young talent and placing it within the organization accordingly. They only have three players on the major league roster that they drafted, with two of them being pitchers C.C. Sabathia and Jeremy Sowers. Shapiro however has done of lot of work in trading for minor league players and with their financial situation; they have to rely on this outlet of acquiring players to match the money of New York, Boston and Los Angeles in the American League. Look for them to go pitching again with Canada?s Phillippe Aumont with their first round pick this year.
Chicago White Sox (Picks: 25th overall)
The White Sox aren?t considered to be a top organization in terms of the draft and developing young talent. They have four players on the major league roster in which they drafted and in recent years and have appeared to missed on prospects like pitcher Brandon McCarthy and outfielder Brian Anderson. The organization appears to like a headless snake, not knowing what their philosophy is or how they can improve, so look for them to go take a flyer on Hillsborough High School (Florida) outfielder Michael Burgess.
Detroit Tigers (Picks: 27th overall)
The Tigers have an excellent organizational pecking order with general manager Dave Dombrowski and manager Jim Leyland. They have drafted players on their major league roster like pitchers Justin Verlander and Joel Zumaya to go with outfielder Curtis Granderson. The team doesn?t have a lot of glaring holes and it can be expected that they will load up on good, solid baseball players in this draft instead of going after flash. In this regard, look for them to take Wilson HS (California) shortstop Ryan Dent.
Minnesota Twins (Picks: 28th overall)
To win in Minnesota, you have to do it with homegrown talent and the Twins are doing that with nine drafted players on their major league roster. They have even produced stars like catcher Joe Mauer, first baseman Justin Morneau and outfielder Torri Hunter. They have hit with a lot of early picks and always seem to get all-around players with versatility to plug in on the major league roster. The Twins might be the best team at drafting and developing players in baseball. Look for them to go after outfielder Kentrail Davis.
