The American League East is home to the two superpowers in the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees, so it could be surprising that it is also home to one of the better drafting organizations in the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. How do each team?s fortunes look heading into the 2007? Tampa Bay Devil Rays (Pick: 1st overall) The Tampa Bay Devil Rays have used their high draft picks to stock up on position players that are finally making their way to the roster. Outfielders Carl Crawford, Elijah Dukes, Rocco Baldelli and second baseman B.J. Upton are were drafted by the Devil Rays. However, pitching hasn?t always been their strong suit, as their first round picks have included Dewon Brazelton, Jeffrey Niemann and Wade Townsend. Look for them to reverse the trend in 2007 with Vanderbilt?s David Price. Baltimore Orioles (Pick: 5th overall) Baltimore is a dysfunctional franchise that has hit recently in the first round with pitcher Adam Loewen and outfielder Nick Markakis as part of their six players on their roster drafted by Baltimore. However, it has been reported that Baltimore doesn?t invest enough in player development to ever be successful in the draft, so they can go anywhere in 2007 to make an impact in their farm system. Look for them to go with a safe bet and appease pitching coach Leo Mazzone in taking Missouri State pitcher Ross Detweiler. Toronto Blue Jays (Picks: 16th and 21st overall) The Blue Jays have the most drafted players on their roster in this division with 10 players, including stars like pitcher Roy Halladay and outfielders Vernon Wells and Alex Rios. General Manager J.P. Ricciardi of course comes from the Billy Beane school of thought that the draft is an important tool to help replenish the major league roster. He also likes to get additional drafts picks, like their No. 16 from Texas for Frank Catalanotto. In our latest mock draft, we have Toronto taking pitcher Madison Bumgarner and 1B/DH Matt LaPorta. New York Yankees (Picks: 30th overall) Now that general manager Brian Cashman has more power in the organization, the draft is being more emphasized, as is player development. They Yankees have six of their drafted players on the roster, which is highlighted by shortstop Derek Jeter, catcher Jorge Posada and pitchers Andy Pettitte and rookie Phillip Hughes. They also made a nice choice of pitcher Ian Kennedy and should continue to look to developing their own pitching with the selection of Vanderbilt closer Casey Weathers. Boston Red Sox (Picks: No first round selections) They lost their only selection, No. 20 overall, to the Los Angeles Dodgers with their signing of shortstop Julio Lugo. Boston has drafted well in the past, but sees these players as chips to acquire proven veterans. They have just four players on the roster who they drafted, but they also traded shortstop Hanley Ramirez and pitcher Anibal Sanchez to Florida for Josh Beckett. All four players on the roster though have been drafted since 2001, showing they see the value of the draft, but maybe not on their roster. Douglas Benton can be reached at [email protected]
