Now that the real opening day is in the books and all, but two teams have played their first game, the question has to be asked is what have we learned. Well, here are a few thoughts that baseball fans might have come across on Monday: ? The story in baseball always starts with the Yankees and boy did they put on a show in Oakland with a resounding 15-2 victory against the A?s. Everything that could of gone well for the Yankees went well and even some more, as the Yankees were able to rock Oakland ace Barry Zito, knocking him out of the game in the second inning. However, it was the outing of Randy Johnson, who went seven strong innings and showed the type of pitcher the Yankees thought they were getting last year. This was only one game, but the Yankees didn?t do anything to prove their lofty expectations wrong. ? The story of the off-season was Barry Bonds and he almost quieted his critics in his first at-bat, as he shot off of Jake Peavy one-hopped the wall in centerfield for a ground-rule double. However, the Giants lost this game 6-1 and Bonds was greeted coming off of the field with a syringe for a fan, which might become commonplace on the road as the season wears on. ? Ho-hum, the Cardinals just come out of spring training and go into Philadelphia to beat the Phillies 13-5 in a game that wasn?t that close. Albert Pujols hit two home runs on the day and looks to already be in MVP-form, which in concert with the return of a healthy Scott Rolen, makes them a strong candidate to win the National League for the second time in three years. ? In the biggest outing of the day, Curt Schilling of the Boston Red Sox came out and showed for at least one day that he is back from an injury-plauged 2005 campaign. In seven innings, Schilling only gave up two runs and gave the Red Sox time to take apart Kevin Millwood and the Texas Rangers. If Schilling can come up with this performance for the length of a season, both he and the Red Sox will be looking to recapture some of that 2004 magic that left them last season. ? Finally, this day gave a little of everything for each fan as the Braves and Dodgers combined for 21 runs in the Braves? 11-10 victory, while the Astros and Marlins combined for one run on a past ball in the Astros? 1-0 victory in their home opener.
