Could Jake Arrieta Win NL Cy Young?

Aug 31, 2015 7:00 AM

The National League Cy Young conversation has largely been limited to teammates Zack Greinke and Clayton Kershaw since the All-Star break, but Jake Arrieta's no-hitter on Sunday night may help him earn consideration.

Arrieta went 6-0 with a 0.43 ERA and allowed just 19 hits in 42⅓ innings pitched in August.

The Chicago Cubs starter has a higher ERA than Greinke's 1.61 at 2.11, but rates better than Kershaw (2.24) entering Monday's action. Wins and losses have been dismissed by many in favor of newer statistics, but Arrieta leads all of baseball with 17 wins.

Ryan Braun Becomes Milwaukee's HR Leader

Aug 20, 2015 6:55 AM

Ryan Braun homered on Wednesday to become the all-time home run leader in Milwaukee Brewers history.

Braun's 252nd home run broke a tie with Hall of Famer Robin Yount.

"It is special," Braun said. "Definitely, a special accomplishment, something that I am proud of."

Braun quickly acknowledged Yount's place in Brewers lore.

"I said the other day, Robin is the best player in franchise history," he said. "Played here for twenty years, accomplished so many incredible things. So, anytime you are mentioned alongside his name, it is definitely special."

Sale Third Pitcher To Allow One Or Fewer Hits, Strike Out 15 In 2015

Aug 17, 2015 6:57 AM

Chris Sale had an impressive outing against the red-hot Chicago Cubs on Sunday.

Sale struck out 15 batters in seven innings of one-hit ball. He is just the third pitcher this season to strike out at least 15 and allow one hit or fewer, joining Corey Kluber and Max Scherzer.

The left-hander also reached the 200-strikeout mark for the third straight season, the first Chicago White Sox pitcher to have three straight such seasons since Hall of Famer Ed Walsh from 1910 to 1912.

Sale had a dominant slider, one he threw for strikes 18 times out of 29 pitches. Cubs hitters swung at 10 of them and missed on eight. The other two swings both resulted in foul balls.

Ichiro Ties Cobb With 4,191 Professional Hits

Aug 15, 2015 1:18 PM

Ichiro Suzuki hit an opposite field single on Friday night, giving him 4,191 professional hits between his career in Japan and Major League Baseball. That ties him with Hall of Famer Ty Cobb.

It's not recognized as an official record, but to compile that many hits at any professional level is impressive.

Major League Baseball is authenticating Ichiro's bat and the ball that was tossed back to the Miami dugout.

"Hall of Famer," Dan Jennings said. "Plain and simple. He's a Hall of Famer. He continues to defy age. He gives tremendous at-bats. He ranges in the outfield. He's got to be one of the most prepared players of this era."

Ichiro now has 2,913 Major League hits, as he inches closer to becoming the 30th player in Major League history to reach the 3,000-hit milestone.

Kemp's Cycle Is First In San Diego History

Aug 15, 2015 1:09 PM

Matt Kemp hit a ninth-inning triple on Friday night to complete the first cycle in San Diego Padres history.

Kemp accomplished the feat in San Diego's 7,444th game as a franchise. Dave Winfield and Tony Gwynn played for the franchise, but neither hit for the cycle.

He didn't even realize the magnitude of his accomplishment until he was brushing himself off after sliding into third base. His coach, Glenn Hoffman, explained to him this was the first one. He thought Hoffman meant it was the first for Kemp.

"I was like, 'Yeah, that is my first one,'" Kemp said. "He said, 'No, that's the first one for the Padres.' I was like, 'Wow.' It's hard to believe, all the great hitters that have been here, Tony Gwynn and all those guys, haven't been able to hit for the cycle. I'm just glad to be able to do it."

500 Home Runs Suddenly In Play For David Ortiz

Aug 13, 2015 4:35 PM

David Ortiz, 39, hit a pair of home runs on Wednesday afternoon, the continuation of a surge that has put the 500-home run mark in play.

Ortiz entered 2015 with 466 career home runs, 34 short of 500. He is now on pace to finish the season with 36 home runs. With 48 games left for the Red Sox, he has 491 homers.

The Boston Red Sox designated hitter will turn 40 in November. Ortiz hit just six home runs through his first 52 games this season. He has 19 home runs over his last 52 games.

"I'm not really trying to accomplish any personal thing," Ortiz said. "I'm just trying to play the game the way I'm supposed to play it.

"If I'm swinging the bat good I'm going to try to put a good swing on the pitch every time. That's how I play the game. But that's all I can control."

Braun's 250th HR One Shy Of Yount's Record

Aug 13, 2015 7:37 AM

Ryan Braun hit the 250th home run of his career on Wednesday, one shy of Hall of Famer Robin Yount's Milwaukee Brewers record.

"Obviously, it's special," Braun said of pulling to within one home run of Yount. "I'm headed in the right direction. But right now we focus on us, focus on what we're trying to do as a team, and it's hard to enjoy any type of individual success when things are going the way they are as a team.

"Obviously, home runs are nice. It's challenging for us to score runs right now. But other than that, I never reflect on anything like that during the year."

Braun hit No. 250 in his 4,619th at-bat. Yount amassed his 251 homers in 11,008 at-bats.

Kershaw Ties Koufax's Franchise Mark With Six 200-Strikeout Seasons

Aug 13, 2015 7:18 AM

Clayton Kershaw tied his mentor Sandy Koufax's franchise record of six straight 200-strikeout seasons while tossing eight scoreless innings on Wednesday night.

"He's Clayton Kershaw," Enrique Hernandez said. "He's the best pitcher on the planet."

Kershaw equaled the mark set by Koufax from 1961 to 1966. Koufax and Tom Seaver (1968-76) are the only pitchers in modern National League history to accomplish the feat in six or more consecutive seasons.

"Not the most important thing in the world, but it's cool to be associated with those guys," Kershaw said.

Evan Gattis Putting Together Historic Triples/Steals Line

Aug 11, 2015 7:26 AM

Evan Gattis has seven triples and no stolen bases for the Houston Astros this season.

The 28-year-old has never stolen a base in his Major League career and entered 2015 with just one triple in his first two seasons.

Johnny Mize holds the Major League record for most triples without a steal. He had 16 triples and no steals in 1938 and followed that up with a 14/0 season in 1939.

Players didn't run a lot back in the 1930s, which helps explain Mize's line.

Of the 14 times a player hit at least 10 triples and stole zero bases, nine came between 1933 and 1940 (and the other five came between 1926 and 1962).

Cardinals Extend Scoreless Streak To 36 Innings

Aug 9, 2015 6:55 AM

The St. Louis Cardinals have tossed three consecutive shutouts, running their scoreless streak to 36 innings.

If the Cardinals shutout the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday, they'll tie the club record for most consecutive shutouts in a single season since 1943 (four) and surpass the franchise scoreless-innings record of 42 straight (also set in 1943).

"There's no doubt we have a lot of talent," Jaime Garcia said of the pitching staff. "We are pulling for each other. We are always watching bullpens and looking for little things that we are doing. Our young guys are two of the most talented guys around the league. They are so talented. Guys like John [Lackey] and Lance are two really good pitchers."
