The Boston Red Sox expect to have Dustin Pedroia for Opening Day after the second baseman underwent thumb surgery.
The operation to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his thumb was performed by Dr. Donald Sheridan in Scottsdale, Ariz.
"It was the less involved of the two potential procedures," Ben Cherington said. "Good prognosis."
Pedroia hurt his hand diving into first base on opening day at Yankee Stadium and played the rest of the season with the injury.
Dustin Pedroia will have thumb surgery on Nov. 12 in Arizona.
The Boston Red Sox second baseman will have a torn ulnar collateral ligament repaired. The procedure may be a bit more complicated than originally thought.
The surgeon, Dr. Donald Sheridan, may need to take a tendon from his wrist to re-attach the thumb ligament.
"I guess because I played with [the injury] the whole year, it's made it a little tougher," Pedroia explained. "If they do the normal surgery, there has to be some good endings [of the ligament] to re-attach it. If there's not, we have to do it a different way."
Dustin Pedroia will have surgery in the coming weeks to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left thumb, an injury he suffered diving into first base on Opening Day.
Pedroia played 160 regular-season games and all 16 playoff games with the injured thumb.
"Yeah, it's nothing new," Pedroia confirmed to ESPNBoston.com on Friday. "I've got to get that thing fixed."
