Rays Work Out Yoan Moncada

Jan 30, 2015 8:26 AM

The Tampa Bay Rays worked out Cuban free agent Yoan Moncada at Tropicana Field this week.

It remains unlikely that they will sign the highly coveted 19-year-old prospect.

Moncada, a switch-hitting infielder, could receive a signing bonus between $30 million and $40 million, a high price for any club but particularly for the Rays.

"We try not to leave any stone unturned, and he's someone who has great intrigue and we're eager to see what he can do," Matt Silverman said on MLB Network Radio. "Given our financial situation, I wouldn't expect us to be the winners of an auction, but that doesn't mean we're not going to do our due diligence, make sure we evaluate the player and put our best foot forward.

"If we happen to be in a position to acquire him, great. But if not, we've done the work and know that we've checked the boxes."

Union Will Back A-Rod If Yankees Try To Deny HR Bonuses

Feb 2, 2015 8:25 AM

The Major League Baseball Players Association will back Alex Rodriguez if the New York Yankees attempt to deny him any future payments.

"The union would challenge any breach of contract with the union," a source close to the MLBPA said. "A player can't be punished again for something he's already been punished for."

Under the terms of the contract Rodriguez signed in 2009, the Yankees would owe him a $6 million bonus if he hits six more homers and ties Willie Mays on the all-time home run list.

However, the Yankees are bracing for a battle, believing that mark is now tarnished and they won’t be able to use it for marketing purposes.

Scout: Tom Brady Had MLB Tools

Jan 29, 2015 4:58 PM

Tom Brady, who will play in his sixth Super Bowl on Sunday, with drafted by the Montreal Expos in 1995, but opted to play football at Michigan.

Brady was once a talented left-handed-hitting catcher at Junipero Serra High School in San Mateo, California.

The Expos selected the then 17-year-old in the 18th round of the 1995 First-Year Player Draft.

Brady immediately impressed former Expos scout John Hughes, who now is with the Miami Marlins.

"You were like, 'Wow, this kind of fits the bill,'" Hughes said. "He could throw. He could receive well. He was a left-handed hitter who had some pull power."

The long-time scout believes Brady could have made it to the Major Leagues.

"I think he would have been a pro," Hughes said. "He had all the intangibles. He could throw, left-handed power. There is no reason to think this guy couldn't have been a big league catcher."
