GM: Astros Plan To Offer Alex Bregman An Extension At Some Point

Feb 29, 2024 7:56 AM

During a lengthy interview with MLB.com on Wednesday, Houston Astros general manager Dana Brown said the club plans to offer a contract extension to Alex Bregman at some point.

Bregman is currently set to become a free agent after the season.

"With Bregman this year, we are going to make him an offer at some point. He has done great things for this organization," Brown said. "We told him at some point we are going to make him an offer. We hope that offer is going to be good enough. But at the end of the day, he has done great things for this organization. He is a pillar, and we would like to keep him around."

Scott Boras: Cody Bellinger's Contract Dictated By 'Irregular' Market

Feb 29, 2024 7:49 AM

As the offseason progressed, Cody Bellinger and his agent, Scott Boras, pivoted from seeking a long-term deal to something shorter with more flexibility.

Bellinger signed a three-year, $80 million deal to return to the Chicago Cubs earlier this month. He can opt out of the pact after the 2025 season.

"There are variables," Boras said of Bellinger's free agency. "We have some irregularity going on in this current market. We have close to 11 teams that are spending less money than they did a year go ... in light of the fact we have record revenues in baseball."

Illinois Gov. 'Reluctant' About White Sox Stadium Plans

Feb 28, 2024 7:49 AM

Jerry Reinsdorf wants a new stadium for the Chicago White Sox, one built largely at public expense.

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker may not be inclined to give Reinsdorf what he wants.

"I start out really reluctant," Pritzker said, "… unless a case is made that the investment yields a long-term return for the taxpayers that we can justify in some way. I haven't seen that yet."

Reinsdorf is seeking $1.7 billion in direct public investment plus tax kickbacks.

Rob Manfred: A's Relocation Plans To Vegas Still 'Solid'

Feb 28, 2024 7:44 AM

Rob Manfred said Tuesday that he still expects the Oakland Athletics to move to Las Vegas, calling the club's relocation plans "solid."

The commissioner did acknowledge things have not been particularly easy thus far though.

"I think Las Vegas is solid, I really do," Manfred said. "It was a little rough with the mayor, Clark County versus the city. But, you know, from my perspective, (Las Vegas major Carolyn Goodman) was the first person who ever talked to me about baseball in Las Vegas.

"I understand all politics are local, and the county is different than the city, but I think the governor and the politicians in general in Las Vegas remain committed to the deal. I think the deal is going to happen."

In addition to the financing and new stadium renderings, the Athletics also have to figure out where they'll play from 2025-27.

Shohei Ohtani Homers In Dodgers Spring Debut

Feb 28, 2024 7:40 AM

Shohei Ohtani homered in his spring debut with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday.

The home run came in his final at-bat of the afternoon. He launched a two-run home run to left field.

"I thought I hit it a little too high initially, but the Arizona weather factored in a little bit," Ohtani said afterward through his interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara. "I felt better each time I came up. It's trending in the right direction."

Ohtani was playing his first game since undergoing right elbow surgery last September and his first since signing a 10-year, $700 million contract with the Dodgers in December.

Royce Lewis Open To Long-Term Deal With Twins

Feb 27, 2024 8:45 AM

Royce Lewis is open to discussing a long-term deal with the Minnesota Twins, according to a report.

However, there is no indication that the two sides have talked yet.

The Twins have cut payroll from $154 million last Opening Day to a projected $120 million or so in 2024, likely because of uncertainty with Bally Sports.

Lewis was the No. 1 overall pick in 2017.
