With the San Diego Padres trading for centerfielder Jim Edmonds, the Phillies are focusing in on Padres' free-agent centerfielder Mike Cameron and remain in the running for free-agent outfielder Geoff Jenkins. San Diego yesterday acquired Edmonds in a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals, but according to the San Diego Union-Tribune, that does not mean the Padres have ended their pursuit of Jenkins. It means only that the Padres have ended their pursuit of Cameron, a free agent who was talking with them about a two-year contract. The Phillies and Cameron talked earlier this month, but the Phillies backed away because Cameron was looking for too many years at that time. Talks apparently have reopened, and a baseball source said the Phillies and Cameron's agent have spoken recently, which was first reported on ESPN.com. Cameron presumably would replace Aaron Rowand in center field, although Cameron would miss the first 25 games of the season because he tested positive for a second time for a banned substance.
