Second base is becoming a first priority for the Rockies. They met with Tadahito Iguchi's agent Tuesday and appear intrigued they are the only team chasing him specifically as a second baseman. They also offered utilityman Clint Barmes for the Astros' Chris Burke and remain interested in free agent Mark Loretta. Iguchi, 32, hit .267 with nine home runs last season, splitting time between the White Sox and Phillies. In 2006, he hit 18 home runs. "He's a good player, and we really like his offense," General Manager Dan O'Dowd said. "But, it's preliminary." Agent Rocky Hall told O'Dowd that Iguchi would be open to playing for the Rockies for more than a one-year deal. He wants security and would accept a multiyear contract to play third base rather than a short-term deal for second, his natural position.
