A rookie Major League Manager named Dick Williams reported to Spring Training in 1967, developed a no-nonsense approach immediately and turned the last-place Red Sox from the previous season into the American League champions.
Williams, 78, is among seven managers and three umpires that comprise the managers/umpires ballot and will be considered by a 16-member electorate of Hall of Fame members, current and former executives and veteran media members. Ten executives comprise a separate ballot to be considered by a 12-member panel of Hall of Famers, current and former executives and veteran media members. To be elected by the Veterans Committee, eligible candidates must garner at least 75 percent of the ballots cast. The results of the voting will be announced on Dec. 3 at baseball's Winter Meetings.
Any candidate receiving 75 percent of the vote on either ballot will earn election to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and will be inducted as part of the 2008 Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, to be held July 27, 2008. Electors will be asked to vote for zero to four candidates on each ballot.
Williams finished with 37 percent of the votes last year, being named on 30 of the ballots cast. He ranked behind Doug Harvey (64.2 percent), Marvin Miller (63 percent) and Walter O'Malley (44.4 percent) and tied with Buzzie Bavasi.
