In the end, Don Mattingly wasn't the favorite after all. The Yankees Monday chose Joe Girardi as their next manage, surprising many industry sources who believed that Mattingly would win out and take the reins of the team for which he once starred. "I can't comment at this time," said Mattingly's agent, Ray Schulte. "You can read into that however you'd like. There's been nothing guaranteed yet, which is why I can't say anything." Schulte said Mattingly took the news of the Yankees' decision hard. "Don was extremely disappointed to learn today that he wasn't the organization's choice to fill the managerial vacancy," the agent said in a statement. "Instead, he was informed the organization offered the position to Joe Girardi."
