In the waning moments of Thursday?s loss to the Tigers, there was only one Yankee on the top step of the dugout. It was Johnny Damon, wearing a windbreaker and no cap, sitting and cheering. It was the most he could do after being removed for a pinch-hitter in the sixth inning. In the span of four games this week, Manager Joe Torre twice removed Damon in the sixth. Damon said he understood why, but it has caused him to wonder whether he would be back next season. Choosing his words carefully, yet not avoiding the question, Damon said it would be hard to imagine himself as a part-time player for the two years remaining on his contract. ?I signed on to be here, but I also would like to try to play every day,? he said before last night?s game. ?I know my body, early in the season, didn?t allow it, but there are a lot of things I want to accomplish in this game."
