Phil Hughes is scheduled to come off the disabled list to make a start Saturday against Kansas City. The righthander, 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA in his two career starts, injured his left hamstring in the seventh inning against the Rangers and was removed with a no-hit bid intact. The injury couldn't have come at a worse time for the Yankees. Mike Mussina was on the disabled list with his own left hamstring strain and Kei Igawa, who signed a five-year, $46 million contract before the season, was struggling to make a quality start. Hughes, the team's No. 1 prospect, was called up to start April 26 after the Yankees were swept in a three-game series in Boston. Originally expected to be out 4-6 weeks, Hughes hit a setback in his rehabilitation when he rolled his left ankle during drills May 25. He was fitted with a boot, which was removed a month later. On June 30, he had a 35-pitch bullpen session. "I was pretty happy with the way everything bounced back from start to start," Hughes said of his five rehab appearances. "I hope I can keep on the same roll I was on."
