D-backs top prospect Justin Upton has been called up to the Majors for the first time, moving up to the big leagues from Double-A with Carlos Quentin headed to the disabled list Thursday.
Upton, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2005 First-Year Player Draft, was en route to join the D-backs on their Southern California swing, but he was not expected to be in the starting lineup for Thursday's afternoon game at San Diego.
Upton, who turns 20 later this month and is the younger brother of Tampa Bay shortstop B.J. Upton, started the year with Class A Visalia, but was promoted to Double-A Mobile after hitting .341 in 32 games. With the BayBears, he is hitting .310 with 13 homers and 53 RBIs. He played in the All-Star Futures Game at AT&T Park last month, hitting a home run.
