Carl Pavano's first season in pinstripes appears to be over, as the Yankees' right-hander was diagnosed with rotator cuff tendinitis, which was causing pain in his humerus bone.
The diagnosis was made by team physician Dr. Stuart Hershon and orthopedic specialist Dr. James Andrews, who examined Pavano this week in Birmingham, Ala.
Pavano was told to rest and rehab his shoulder for a minimum of six weeks, putting the rest of his season in doubt.
"The timeframe doesn't fit with the schedule," said general manager Brian Cashman. "I'm not saying he's done, but I don't want to give the impression that we're expecting him back. We need to put him in a position to get healthy, and hopefully this will get it done."
"When you talk about six weeks, there's not much more to the season than that," said manager Joe Torre. "The chances are that if he does come back, it will be a long shot."
