The possibility exists that the White Sox could re-sign right fielder Jermaine Dye, a consideration that leaves manager Ozzie Guillen hesitant to talk about the future.
"As long as Dye is here, he'll play every day," Guillen said Sunday. "[Ryan] Sweeney, if we need him here, of course we're going to call him up."
Agent Bob Bry wouldn't comment on talks involving Dye, who can become a free agent after this season. Dye was miffed two weeks ago that the Sox negotiated with pitcher Mark Buehrle after saying in March they would postpone negotiations with free agents until after the season unless they approached general manager Ken Williams.
"I can only worry about what I have here right now," Guillen said.
Dye's case to stay could be helped by the fact that Triple-A outfielders Sweeney and Brian Anderson (out with a wrist injury) haven't developed as quickly as the Sox would like.
"It depends on how Sweeney is," Guillen said of whether Dye could be re-signed. "You have to be realistic."
Sweeney is batting .295 with five homers and 32 RBIs at Triple-A Charlotte.
"Right now we have to worry about winning as many games as we can win. That's the right attitude," Guillen said. "If we do something next year ... I don't know how drastic it's going to be because I don't know exactly where the Sweeneys, the [Josh] Fields, where the [Jerry] Owens, the [Adam] Russells ... Where are they going to be? Are they going to help us?
"It's easy to say those guys are ready to play in the big leagues. ... To compete for the division title, that's the question mark."
