The Carlos and Carlos show of 2006 is suffering a sophomore slump.
After hitting a combined 79 home runs and driving in a combined 230 runs in their first season as Mets teammates, Carlos Beltran and Carlos Delgado have struggled this year, typified by yesterday's dismal showing at the plate.
Beltran, the Mets' $119 million center fielder, was 0-for-6, while Delgado mustered two late singles after popping up in his first three at-bats in the cleanup spot. But while Delgado said he felt "all right" yesterday after a four-strikeout performance Friday night, Beltran admitted his batting woes partially stem from a nagging left quad injury that has never fully healed.
"It's something I've got to play through," said Beltran, who fouled out to Yankees catcher Jorge Posada with the bases loaded in the ninth to end the game. "It's not getting worse. I'm not blaming that for the bad day I had."
