The New York Yankees acquired left-hander Ryan Weathers from the Miami Marlins in exchange for four minor leaguers as they look to add depth to their starting rotation. The Marlins received outfielders Dillon Lewis and Brendan Jones along with infielders Dylan Jasso and Juan Matheus in the deal.

Weathers, 26, is the son of former Yankees pitcher David Weathers, who allowed just one run over 11 innings during the 1996 postseason. The younger Weathers is under team control for three more seasons and has one minor-league option remaining.

Lewis and Jones rank among the top 20 in MLB Pipeline's prospect rankings. Lewis, 22, was one of the Yankees' fastest-rising prospects last season and posted a 121 wRC+ across Low A and High A with 22 home runs and 26 stolen bases. Jones, 23, had a 132 wRC+ for Double-A Somerset in 2025 and stole 51 bases across multiple levels.

Jasso, 23, was New York's No. 23 prospect and can play first, second and third base. Matheus, 21, is lauded for his bat-to-ball skills despite lacking power.

Weathers has struggled to stay healthy over the past two years. A lat injury limited him to eight starts in 2025, during which he pitched to a 3.99 ERA and 4.60 FIP over 38.1 innings. If healthy, Weathers offers intriguing upside with a 97 mph average fastball velocity, above-average whiff percentage and strong walk rate.

The Yankees needed rotation depth with Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon and Clarke Schmidt sidelined to begin the season while recovering from elbow procedures. Acquiring Weathers allows New York to remove Ryan Yarbrough from their tentative opening day rotation.

The team is expected to continue pursuing a higher-level starting pitcher and has been connected with Milwaukee's Freddy Peralta and Washington's MacKenzie Gore.
