The Boston Red Sox acquired first baseman Willson Contreras from the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday, sources told ESPN. Boston will receive $8 million toward Contreras' remaining $42.5 million contract and sent right-hander Hunter Dobbins and pitching prospects Yhoiker Fajardo and Blake Aita to St. Louis.

Contreras waived his no-trade clause and received an additional $1 million on his 2028 club option buyout. The three-time All-Star fills Boston's need at first base after losing Pete Alonso to division rival Baltimore in free agency.

Contreras, 33, has posted a .258/.352/.459 slash line over his 10-year career. He hit .257/.344/.447 with 20 home runs and 80 RBIs last season after shifting full-time to first base.

The right-handed hitter debuted with the Chicago Cubs in 2016 as a catcher. He brings veteran experience to a Red Sox lineup competing in the American League East.

Contreras' contract pays him $18 million in 2026 and $18.5 million in 2027. His 2028 club option is worth $17.5 million with a $6 million buyout.

The Cardinals acquired 26-year-old Dobbins, who projects to join St. Louis' rotation. Dobbins went 4-1 with a 4.13 ERA over 13 outings in his debut season, allowing six home runs in 61 innings while striking out 45 against 17 walks.

Fajardo, 19, posted a 2.25 ERA over 72 innings between the Florida Complex League and Low-A Salem this year. The Venezuela native throws a fastball up to 97 mph with a changeup and slider.

Aita, 22, was a sixth-round pick from Kennesaw State in 2024 and finished this season at High-A. He struck out 99 and walked 30 in 115.1 innings with a 3.98 ERA.

The deal marks the second transaction between Boston and St. Louis this winter. Sonny Gray waived his no-trade clause to join the Red Sox from the Cardinals in late November.

The Cardinals were not actively shopping Contreras but moved forward after landing Dobbins. St. Louis continues rebuilding while Boston aims to remain competitive in the AL East.
