The Arizona Diamondbacks are more open to trading second baseman Ketel Marte than in previous offseasons, according to sources briefed on their thinking, as the club seeks to address multiple roster holes and create payroll flexibility for other moves.

Marte, 32, is owed $102.5 million over the next six seasons. He ranks 13th in the majors in fWAR over the past three seasons, making his contract reasonable relative to production.

The Diamondbacks face acute pitching needs after trading Merrill Kelly to the Texas Rangers at the deadline. The club also expects to lose veteran right-hander Zac Gallen to free agency.

Ace Corbin Burnes and relievers Justin Martinez and AJ Puk are all recovering from Tommy John surgery. The trio should return at some point during the 2025 season, but their timelines and performance levels remain uncertain.

Arizona ranked sixth in the majors in runs last season despite Marte missing 36 games. Trading him could create a significant offensive void, which one team source acknowledged might be "robbing Peter to pay Paul."

If the Diamondbacks plan to move Marte, the current offseason represents their best opportunity. Marte will achieve 10 years of service in April, with five consecutive seasons for the same club, granting him full no-trade protection.

Center field represents another potential area for improvement. The Diamondbacks could continue with Alek Thomas and Jake McCarty, while Jordan Lawlar is playing the position in winter ball. The team's offseason focus, however, will almost certainly prioritize pitching acquisitions.
