The New York Mets are close to a deal to hire John Gibbons as their new bench coach, according to a report.

Gibbons played all 18 of his career Major League games with the Mets, including eight with the 1986 World Series championship team.

The 61-year-old would bring a wealth of experience under first-year manager Carlos Mendoza.

During his two managerial stints with the Toronto Blue Jays (2004-08 and 2013-18), Gibbons compiled a 793-789 (.501) record and led the club to the American League Championship Series in both 2015 and 2016.
