Jose Ramirez of the Cleveland Guardians played the second half of the season and the playoffs with a torn right thumb ligament that will require surgery.

The Guardians said Ramirez injured the ulnar collateral ligament in his thumb during a June game in Los Angeles. He could have opted for surgery, which would have sidelined him for two months, but decided to keep playing.

Cleveland's season ended in Game 5 of the ALDS against the New York Yankees on Tuesday.
