George Kirby pulled off a rare feat by throwing 24 straight strikes to start the Seattle Mariners' 3-1 loss to the Washington Nationals on Wednesday night.

Kirby gave up five hits and one run before throwing his first ball to Joey Meneses in the third inning. The right-hander is the first pitcher since 1988 to begin his appearance by throwing 24 consecutive strikes.

"I looked up at 15 or 16, and I was like 'Oh, man,'" said Kirby, who who was Seattle's first-round draft pick in 2019 and made his major league debut in May.

Kirby struck out nine in seven innings, giving up eight hits without a walk.
