The Boston Red Sox have fired Dave Dombrowski just one season after he helped build a World Series champion.

The club will elevate senior vice president Raquel Ferreira and assistant general managers Eddie Romero, Brian O'Halloran and Zack Scott to jointly lead baseball operations for the rest of the season.

Dombrowski's contract ran through the 2020 season.

The Red Sox are eight games out of the American League's second Wild Card and 17.5 games behind the first place New York Yankees.

"This is a guy that gave me a chance to come here and be a big league manager," Alex Cora said Sunday night. "It's one of those things that caught me. They just told me, so I'm not ready to talk about it."
