John Farrell was initially unsuccessful in trying to bring Craig Kimbrel into Sunday night's game between the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees in the ninth inning.

With one out and and the winning run in scoring position, Farrell emerged from the dugout and motioned for Kimbrel to enter the game. Crew chief Fieldin Culbreth denied the request.

The request was denied because a manager or coach is prohibited from making multiple mound visits while the same batter is at the plate. Red Sox pitching coach Carl Willis had just gone out to the mound to speak to Addison Reed as Jacoby Ellsbury was coming to the plate.

Farrell had to wait until the next batter to make the change.

"I messed up," Farrell said. "I know the rule. I messed up trying to get Kimbrel into the game."
