Eric Bruntlett, a jack of all trades, signed a one-year contract worth $525,000, Astros general manager Tim Purpura announced on Friday. The contract also includes a series of incentive clauses. Bruntlett, who will turn 29 in March, will be manager Phil Garner's "super utility" man in 2007. A versatile fielder, Bruntlett will be called upon to play almost every position, including all three outfield spots, plus second base, third base and shortstop. Bruntlett hit .277 last season with a career-high 33 hits and eight doubles. He led the Astros with a .412 average as a pinch-hitter, including four RBIs and three doubles. He appeared at six positions in 2006 -- 23 games at second, 21 at short, eight in center, six in left, five in right and two at third.
