Luis Severino will make his debut for the New York Yankees against the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday night, leading to heightened expectations in the Bronx.
The Yankees didn't add a starter ahead of the non-waiver trade deadline, in part because they have confidence in Severino.
The right-hander is the team's best pitching prospect in a decade, but Brian Cashman is trying to temper expectations.
“He's not a Matt Harvey-type,” Cashman said, bringing up the Mets starter unsolicited, admitting that he wanted to temper expectations by saying Severino is not the Dark Knight.
"We are really, really excited for him," Cashman added. "It shouldn’t be miscast, either. We’ll let him get his feet wet and see what he can do. He is a really exciting cat. I think he could have a very good career, but he is still young and he is still developing.”
The Yankees signed Severino for $250,000 out of the Dominican Republic in 2012 when the pitcher was just 18.
