There is a chance that the Detroit Tigers will entertain offers for Max Scherzer this winter, according to sources.

Scherzer is the favorite to win this year's American League Cy Young, but he is also one year away from free agency and a client of Scott Boras. He is unlikely to sign a long-term with Detroit this close to hitting the open market.

The Tigers already have three players making $20 million or more on their roster -- Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder and Justin Verlander -- and three others making at least $12 million. Scherzer is likely to join Cabrera, Fielder and Verlander in the $20 million-plus range.

"If the Tigers do shop Scherzer, many teams would likely be interested, even though an acquiring team would face the same trouble locking him up long-term that the Tigers do," writes Danny Knobler.
