The suddenly struggling Tigers released designated hitter Dmitri Young on Wednesday in a move general manager Dave Dombrowski described as "strictly performance-related."
Young was batting .254 with seven homers and 23 RBI in 47 games of an injury-plagued season.
"This situation for us, from a performance perspective, we felt that it was a move that was best for the ballclub at this time," Dombrowski said after Wednesday's 5-4 loss to Seattle.
