Plate umpire Marty Foster admitted after Monday's game between the Tampa Bay Rays and Texas Rangers that he made the wrong call to end the game.

Foster called a game-ending third strike with Rangers closer Jon Nathan on the mound and Tampa Bay's Ben Zobrist at the plate. Everyone involved expected ball four to be called. Zobrist was headed down to first base.

Nathan, who earned his 300th career save, mouthed "wow" when a strike was called to end the game 5-4, in favor of Texas.

"That kind of call cannot occur. I don't even want to say under those circumstances," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "The last inning, the last out of the game. I'm not even going to go there. That call can't be made in a Major League Baseball game."

Foster was honest after the game, but that won't take the loss away from Tampa Bay.

"I saw the pitch and of course don't have the chance to do it again," Foster told a pool reporter after the game. "But had I had a chance to do it again, I wouldn't call that pitch a strike."
