The Royals have sent Luke Hochevar, a former No. 1 overall pick, to the bullpen.

He has endured five shaky seasons as a member of the starting rotation.

Hochevar had been competing with Bruce Chen, Will Smith and Luis Mendoza for the fifth spot in Kansas City.

Drafted in 2006, Hochevar is scheduled to make $4.56 million this season.
