Brandon Inge will compete for time at second base with the Tigers during Spring Training.
Inge, formerly the team's third baseman, had his job taken away by Miguel Cabrera, who shifted his position to allow for the addition of first baseman Prince Fielder.
"I don't know if he can do it," manager Jim Leyland said of Inge, who has never played second base in a regular-season game.
The Tigers don't have a full-time second baseman. Ramon Santiago and Ryan Raburn had been projected to split time there.
