The Yankees are hoping to get enough salary relief in a potential trade with the Pirates involving A.J. Burnett that they can re-sign Eric Chavez and perhaps add another left-handed bat.
New York hasn't spent much money this offseason, a departure from their usual winter approach.
The Yankees and Pirates have been discussing a trade involving Burnett since late last week.
As it currently stands, they have about $2 million budgeted for a designated hitter.
