The Yankees on Wednesday claimed outfielder Aaron Guiel off waivers from the Royals.
The 33-year-old Guiel hit .220 with three home runs and seven RBIs in 19 games with the Royals before being designated for assignment on Friday.
The Yankees hope Guiel can help an outfield depleted by the injuries to left fielder Hideki Matsui and right fielder Gary Sheffield.
"Maybe he and Bernie (Williams) will platoon," New York manager Joe Torre said of Guiel. "He gives us a little more experience. He's got some power. He's a guy who hustles all the time."
