The Red Sox don't want to go over the $178 million luxury tax threshold this offseason. Boston has never been afraid to go the extra mile when it comes to payroll, but there has been some hesitation this year. David Ortiz will be re-signed for $14 million to $16 million, meaning the Red Sox can only afford a mid-level right fielder. Michael Cuddyer and Carlos Beltran now appear too expensive and a team official indicated that even Cody Ross might cost too much. Boston could also use a closer after Jonathan Papelbon's departure, but someone like Ryan Madson might cost too much.
